Visiting Artist in Residence

Applications are currently closed for 2024.

We will be seeing 2025 Visiting Artists in the fall of 2024, please check back for details!

Sloss Furnaces Foundation hosts three, 8-week Visiting Artists throughout the year, typically in the Summer (June-Aug) and Fall (Sept-Nov).

This program is designed for emerging and mid-career artists interested in developing their studio practice and honing technical skills. Visiting Artists will be provided with a furnished apartment near Sloss Furnaces, all casting materials, and 24 hr. access to our sculpture facilities in Sloss' historic casting shed.

Visiting Artists are expected to have a final exhibition at The 600 at the conclusion of their residency. The majority of the work is to be displayed for up to a year, with the option to sell throughout the exhibition (15% of sales to Sloss, 85% of sales to the artist)

Artists are asked to donate one piece from their residency to Sloss Furnaces' permanent collection.

Summer applications are due Friday, March 15th 2024.

Fall applications are due Monday, June 3rd 2024.

This opportunity is available to US-based and international applicants who are able to obtain their own visa for the duration of the residency. Unfortunately, Sloss is unable to assist with visa sponsorship at this time.

Please note - The apartment complex is roughly 2 miles from Sloss, and public transportation in Birmingham is not a practical option. We highly encourage candidates to have their own vehicle or plan alternative methods for daily transportation (bike, uber, lyft, etc.). Unfortunately, Sloss is unable to assist with commuter costs at this time.

To apply, please submit an application via the form below.

Note: Those who complete the form below do not need to submit the application packet

Alternatively, you may submit a single PDF via email including: the application form (below), CV/resume, letter of intent, artist statement, digital portfolio with 10 images, to virginia@slossfurnaces.org.
